Integrated Learning Center
Paulien & Associates was called in as an outside consultant to help a campus
committee, chaired by a Vice Provost, in determining the space needs for this
new building which is intended to house interdisciplinary freshman core
courses. The desire of the institution is to teach the lecture portions in
relatively small lecture sizes (100 to 300). Lecture halls had special
requirements to provide the potential of music and dance demonstrations for an
Introduction to Humanities course, the provision of sophisticated multi-media
demonstration equipment, and the option of network access for all student
stations within the auditoriums. A freshman commons, where individual and group
computer-aided project work and study could take place, is a significant
component of this facility. In addition, rooms for discussion sections were
expected to provide both flexibility in arrangement for teaching and computer
network access, and access to other multi-media. The analysis included
determination of the number of auditoria and discussion rooms needed to teach
the assumed number of courses at target enrollment levels. The building was
programmed at approximately 80,000 gross square feet and is being designed as an
underground facility on the central campus mall.
