Pima Community College District (AZ)

Paulien & Associates, Inc. was selected as planners to provide educational specifications for a $44 million campus expansion on the Downtown Campus.  Preliminary work involved an analysis of the appropriate educational programs to be retained on that campus and an analysis of some which might be moved to other campuses within the Pima Community College District.  Work was led by the campus president and the dean of instruction.

Pima Community College District contracted with Paulien & Associates to develop the district-wide space and utilization standards using Fall 1996 data.  All four of the comprehensive campuses of Pima Community College were analyzed and a district-wide set of space standards and utilization standards was developed for eleven categories of space including classrooms, laboratories, offices, and library/student centers. After that study was completed analyses were performed subsequent years on the Fall 1997, Fall 1998, Fall 1999, and Fall 2000 data to show the utilization trends on the comprehensive campuses of Pima Community College over several years.

Continued work included an updated analysis of existing space and reapplication of space guidelines for the Campus Master Planning process.  As part of the master Planning teams Paulien & Associates analyzed existing space and applied space guidelines to determine current and target year space needs at all four campuses.

After having analyzed space needs for the East Campus master planning process Paulien & Associates provided consultation services to the architectural firm during the master plan design process.  Space needs defined during the master plan development were reviewed in order to generate space needs on a room-by-room basis on a departmental level.

Paulien & Associates, Inc. also developed the program space needs for Phase I development for the new North West campus for Pima Community College.  This portion of the programming development includes the room-by-room identification of space needs, input as to equipment and IT (instructional and informational technology) needs, and adjacencies of programs, offices, classrooms, and laboratories.

Paulien & Associates was involved in the Pima Community College district-wide College Learning Services Project.  The project was undertaken to realize the college’s evolution toward integrated Learning Resource Centers and Student Centers.  The Library/Student Services Center was envisioned to support self-directed student learning, facilitate the development of students’ potential, and serve as the locus of community on the campuses.  Paulien & Associates developed a program plan for the prototype Library/Student Services Center for all the campuses.  The prototype embodied the one-stop-shop philosophy by providing services to students in a convenient, integrated, and state-of-the-art manner.  Services included Admissions/Registration, Counseling/ Advising, Assessment, Financial Aid, Career/Transfer Center, and Disabled Student Resources.  The prototype also incorporated a variety of services and learning experiences located together to eliminate fragmentation that existed among college units.  This concept is expected to be part of the transformation and expansion of teaching, learning, and support services in the future.
